After years of no word on new entries to the Metroid series (Metroid Prime: Federation Force does not count), Nintendo announced its second Metroid game for the day. An hour ago they announced Metroid Prime 4 coming to Switch, and on their Treehouse E3 2017 livestream they debuted a trailer for a 3DS entry: Metroid: Samus Returns.
Immediately after the announcement trailer, Nintendo employees proceeded to demonstrate gameplay live.
Metroid: Samus Returns is a 2.5D remake of the 1991 GameBoy game Metroid: Return of Samus. The original was about bounty hunter Samus Aran being tasked with heading to planet SR-388 and exterminating the dangerous parasitic Metroids.
This new 3DS version features a slightly more cinematic approach to the original game with cutscenes to shape the action. Developer MercurySteam, who also brought Castlevania: Lords of Shadow to the 3DS, are creating the game.
Metroid: Samus Returns will be out for 3DS on September 15.
