Remember Pokémon Go? That was a wild time. That was a good time. I went outside for a while, it was weird and a little bit frightening but worth it because I caught a Meowth. What more could I want in life?
But in case you gave up on it, like I have, there’s a lot of interesting things going on that might make it worth looking into again. Recently, there was an update adding the Generation 2 Pokémon to the game as well as a range of new cosmetic items and various bug fixes. That alone makes it sound a lot more interesting, but there’s a whole lot more to come according to the CEO of Niantic, John Hanke.
Recently, he spoke to the German division of Wired and had a lot to say about what he wants the future of the mobile game to be like in regard to not only new features, such as improved gym battles, but new Pokemon of the legendary variety.
There are a couple of areas that need to be improved – one of them being playing together and gym battles. We released those in an incomplete state. We knew from Ingress that cooperation and planning can be a lot of fun. When people have a common goal, then that’s a strong incentive to meet up with friends or even with people you don’t know.
The gameplay in gym battles is very limited. They just don’t work as well as we wish they would. We will overhaul this aspect of the game to ensure more teamwork and to give people a bigger incentive to receive the rewards from gym battles.
The idea of improved gym battles is certainly an exciting one. In the very limited experience I had with them, I found the controls a little confusing and I wasn’t entirely sure how to play in a way that was effective. Hopefully this experience will be far more streamlined.
As for the inclusion of legendaries, a feature a lot of people are excited about, Hanke went on to say, “I can say with certainty we will be seeing more of that later this year.”
By the sound of things, Pokemon Go might just be worth picking back up. Maybe I’ll go catch another Meowth, at least until they introduce Generation 3 Pokemon and I can go catch a Skitty.
