There’s going to be more than one sequel strategy game in town this year. Relic recently released a story trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III that signals a return to the roots of the first game in the series. Base building is making a comeback and combat will involve larger scale battles between hordes of infantry, tanks, special elites, plus the addition of new epic sized units.
The latest trailer for the game “Prophecy of War” outlines the motivation for all three factions; the Space Marines, Eldar and Orks are all racing to be the first to uncover the devastating McGuffin artefact (known in game as the Spear of Khaine) from the mysterious world of Acheron. Heroes and fan favourites from previous entries of the series, Space Marine Gabriel Angelos and Eldar Farseer Macha are returning to the fray along with the Ork Warlord Gorgutz.
Relic have been updating the game’s main news website with small features on the units within each of the factions. Plus Relic have discussed the inspiration they have taken from the Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) genre to help design the hero unit abilities. The single player campaign will feature playable missions for each of the three factions and while multiplayer has also been confirmed there are no meaty details announced at this stage.
With a release date of “some time” in 2017, the game still has some development work ahead. While Relic has confirmed on Twitter the Army Painter will be returning, some important questions about the game remain to be answered:
- Will the multiplayer Last Stand and story Co-op game modes from Dawn of War 2 return?
- Can we expect some form of mod support, community tools or Steam workshop integration?
- What are the post launch plans for the game; will they follow the expansion pack model of previous Dawn of War games or look towards Company of Heroes 2 DLC as a way to add new playable factions and story missions?
- Will any of our valiant heroes find true love on their journey in a universe beset by gratuitous violence and never ending conflict?
Only time and fan fiction will tell…
