Over 4000 titles were added to Steam this past year, which means that about 40% of all games on the service were released in 2016.
They also released the above pie chart, which shows the amount of games released, by year, on Steam since 2005.
For more perspective, just last year, Steam saw the release of 2964 games, and 1,772 games in 2014 (this isn’t including DLC or any other add-ons).
So, no doubt, this number of almost 40% is absolutely incredible, and it’s probably due to the surge of interest and appreciation for indie games.
However, it must also be noted that Steam has practically no quality control, which means that pretty much any game can get on the service. If you look at it from that point of view, it doesn’t seem nearly as exciting.
Instead, look at it like this: the gaming market is growing, and developers are attempting to answer the call and satiate the appetites of the growing number of gamers, and that is a good thing.
