Word on the street is that United Front Games has been closed down. Best known for the open-world Hong Kong adventure of Sleeping Dogs, United Front was also behind ModNation Racers, LittleBigPlanet Karting and Marvel Battlegrounds for Disney Infinity 3.0, as well as contributing to both Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition and Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
Just a week ago, United Front hosted a free weekend for its upcoming game Smash+Grab, which has been getting “Mostly Positive” reviews on Steam, where it’s been in Early Access since late September. Reviews have likened the “stylish, strategic beat ’em up” to cult film The Warriors, with gamers around the world looking forward to the full release.
Today though, the Smash+Grab Steam page has no way of purchasing the game, adding fuel to the rumour that the developer’s shut its doors.
Sleeping Dogs, once known as True Crime: Hong Kong, was released in 2012 to great critical acclaim. Fans clamoured for a sequel but were instead given a multiplayer spin-off. Triad Wars never made it out of beta testing, with United Front and publisher Square Enix pulling the plug in January 2016.
The story first popped up on NeoGAF, but confirmation has started appearing online, including a statement from producer Jen Timms, “Currently mourning the best job I’ve ever had, and the most wonderful team I’ve ever worked with.”
