Another new feature is coming to Pokémon Go – and, unusually, we heard about it first directly from Niantic. Those medals you’ve been earning by catching pocket monsters will soon translate to a catch bonus, which will give you a better chance of capturing even more Pokémon!
It sounds simple enough: Catch enough Pokémon of the same type and you’ll work your way up to a new tier, but we’ll let the developers explain it:
We are adding a new feature which grants a catch bonus when you earn medals based on catching certain types of Pokémon (Kindler, Psychic, Gardener, etc.). These new bonuses will give you a better chance of capturing Pokémon with a related type. For example, as you reach a higher tier for the Kindler Medal, your bonus to catch Fire-type Pokémon such as Charmander, Vulpix and Ponyta increases.
Yes, some Pokémon have multiple types (like the Normal/Flying Pidgey) – your bonus will be the average of the bonuses for each type (so Pidgey would earn you a combination of both Normal and Flying bonuses).
We’re hoping that when this update happens (we don’t have a timeframe beyond “soon”), that the bonuses you’ve already unlocked give a retroactive boost to your catching abilities. I’ve already racked up a bunch of gold medals – Punk Girl, Swimmer, Ruin Maniac, etc – so my fingers are firmly crossed that will mean bonuses for me trying to catch poison, water, and ground-type Pokémon!
