It looks like the future of Gears of War might not necessarily be in the shooter genre, according to the Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, and the Director of The Coalition, Chuck Osieja.
The two were recently in attendance at the Xbox Fanfest in Sydney, where Gamespot posed them with the question: If Gears of War could expand into any other gaming genre, what would it be?
Immediately, Spencer said that Osieja should be careful about what exactly he says, hinting that there is probably something already in the works.
Osieja, with his boss next to him, gave the reply:
At Microsoft, we evaluate all opportunities for our franchises. So, if the right opportunity presents itself, we’ll explore that as something we can offer our fans.
To which Spencer booed and gave him thumbs down, saying:
Definitely when we got the team together and talked about the future of gears of war, I think there’s multiple ways that you can tell that story. Multiple gameplay genres. I think it’s a really big IP and it’s an IP that could exist in linear form, in books–we’ve seen that; in different gaming genres.
He then went on to tease by saying that the franchise has a lot of room to grow.
The next installment in the franchise, and the first to be developed by Microsoft, Gears of War 4, is out October 11.
