As much as you’re hanging out for a remastered edition of Red Dead Redemption, even you can acknowledge that a polished-up version of a 6-year old game probably isn’t quite what Sony would use to show off its brand new, super-powerful PlayStation Neo, right? …and yet, that’s what the latest rumour is suggesting.
First surfacing on Korean gaming site Gamefocus (as translated by NeoGAF member Delaney), the new story says the game will be out on PC and Xbox One as well as PS4, and is expected to launch in the first half of next year.
A lot of the story is believable – including the snippet that the Korean version of the remasters (unlike the originals) will be fully localised in Korean (rather than being packaged with a translated script). The source also reports that Korea will get the PC and PS4 versions of the game, but couldn’t confirm the Xbox One build.
…but. The source also says that the game will be revealed at this week’s PlayStation Meeting – the same one where Sony is anticipated to finally take the wraps off of the Neo. Word on the street has Rockstar’s game as one of the showcase titles – but we have our doubts.
In addition to the fact that Red Dead Redemption is more than six years old (and scarcely the sort of thing to show off the power of the new console), the game also hit Xbox One Backward Compatibility in July, which means people who want to play it on more recent hardware already have the opportunity to do just that. It would have been an odd move from Rockstar to release the alternative version six months away from a full-blown remastered release, too.
However! …perhaps the remastered Red Dead Redemption isn’t the big showcase title. Perhaps it’s an afterthought, revealed to tie in with, oh, y’know, Red Dead Redemption 2. A sequel could well be shiny enough to warrant space at such a showcase, don’tchathink?
The PlayStation Meeting is set for 3pm Wednesday September 7, in New York – and even if everybody’s favourite spaghetti western doesn’t make an appearance, it should be an impressive show regardless.
