All 16 of the original Call of Duty 4 multiplayer maps are getting remastered, according to Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg.
The news was announced at the Call of Duty XP event today. The thing is, to get the maps you have to buy Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, and beyond that, you have to buy either the Legacy, Legacy Pro or Digital Deluxe version.
This is definitely a tricky sales tactic by the studio. While Call of Duty 4 is perhaps the most important multiplayer FPS game, it’s still not worth spending $80 just to be able to play the original 16 maps.
However, I would be shocked if, at some point down the road, Activision didn’t offer them as a standalone option, probably after people get comfortable with Infinite Warfare, and hype starts dying down. It would work to make them more money and generate more hype for the arguably dying franchise. If this did happen, I would expect it sometime next year, well after the holiday season.
