The news comes via a blog post by the development team, and states:

You will be able to pick your favorite Pokémon from your collection to become your buddy, opening up unique in-game rewards and experiences. Buddy Pokémon will appear alongside your Trainer avatar on your profile screen, adding helpful bonuses such as awarding Candy for walking together. You’ll also have the ability to change your Buddy Pokémon at any time.

According to the developers, the feature, “is just around the corner.”

This feature actually sounds like a good idea, which is important for Niantic right now, seeing as their number of active players has gone down rather quickly.

Niantic’s two biggest struggles right now are trust and interest. They need to garner interest by doing things like adding good features like this one, but that interest is never going to come if players don’t trust them, and after the tracking systems being removed and the legendary bird fiascos, it’s no wonder that trust for the company is at a low right now.
