The world is about to get even more Top Gear, as Finnish developer Motorious Entertainment announces not one, but three games based on the world-famous motoring show. The first – Top Gear the Road Trip – is due out later this year, for iOS and Android.
While it might not be an instantly familiar name – yet – Motorious is a studio with a solid racing pedigree, having worked on the FlatOut series, Sega Rally, Ridge Racer Unbounded and Brawl Bolts, so it’s a good fit for this new project. And even more than that, Jari Pauna, CEO and Creative Director of Motorious is more than just a fan.
I have been working in various positions in the entertainment industry for twenty years, and I’ve been part of the Top Gear family for the past five years – since 2011 – as Editor in Chief of the Finnish language version of the show. The Top Gear brand is very familiar to me, and I understand the essence of the IP, which is about so much more than cars.
Top Gear the Road Trip is, in essence, a virtual version of the show. The casual free-to-play mobile title borrows some of the most beloved challenges from the BBC series, and puts you in control. Build an Amphibious Car! Launch the Reliant Robin Space Shuttle into the cosmos! Play Car Football! Get amongst some Toyota Hilux Destruction!
…and, believe it or not, the game features “casual match three control mechanics” alongside action sequences on your drive from England to France, via the Alps and Italy. Strategy and planning are essential – plus keeping your car in tune – as you win puzzle races and reach Top Gear Challenge levels.
Motorious has secured a 500,000 Euro seed investment from two Nordic investment companies, with one game due out this year, and two more by the end of 2017. Keep an eye out!
