My advice: Don’t ever, ever look up footage of the original BioShock online. Remember how beautiful it looked? Hate to wreck it for you, but by today’s standards, it wasn’t really that great. If only someone could spend the time revamping the older games, and re-releasing them for new hardware! Something like that – like BioShock: The Collection – would be perfect!
BioShock: The Collection does, of course, exist – and to show off just how much work’s gone into this new version, 2K has released a handy video that compares the original footage to the remaster, running at 1080p and “up to 60FPS”. Note: If you haven’t played the first BioShock, this could be a bit spoiler-y.
The Collection contains remastered versions of all three BioShock games for both PS4 and Xbox One. The PC edition features remastered BioShock and BioShock 2, but BioShock Infinite was considered to be shiny enough, so is included just as it was when it was released.
Want to know more about what’s gone on here? You might be interested in the documentary series Imagining BioShock, which is also included in The Collection. These videos give a little peek behind the scenes, with creative director Ken Levine and animation lead Shawn Robertson offering some commentary on what’s been going on.
The best bit about all this? You don’t have to wait long to get your hands on it. Bioshock: The Collection is out September 16 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
