Thousands of League of Legends fans across the country – and packed into the Courier-Mail Piazza in Brisbane – watched Chiefs return victorious to this year’s Oceanic Pro League Grand Final, smashing Legacy eSports in an impressive 3-0 clean sweep.
Team captain Simon “Swiffer” Papamarkos explains:
I think we really showed why we deserved to be the number one seed coming out of Oceania and this is probably the best opportunity that we’ve ever had to show on an international stage that we’re more than capable to make it to Worlds.
It’s the second season in a row that’s seen Chiefs take out the championships, setting them up for a great run at Worlds, later this year.
But! Before Worlds is the International Wild Card Qualifiers (IWCQ), held in Brazil later this month. Chiefs will face off against teams from Brazil, Commonwealth of Independent States, Japan, Turkey, South East Asia and Latin America for their chance to move onto Worlds. Regions that have already qualified include North America, Europe, Korea, China, and the combination of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
We want to come in the top two at IWCQ as making it to Worlds has always been our dream as an organisation and as individuals.
IWCQ consists of a Best of 1 Round Robin tournament, where the top four will progress to the Finals, and then the top two head on to Worlds. The event is held between August 24 and September 4, so stay tuned for more updates!
