Jared Leto is reportedly disappointed with how Suicide Squad was cut.
In several interviews, he has said that numerous scenes he shot for the movie were cut, and that he shot enough scenes for there to be an entire Joker movie. He told IGN:
“Were there any that didn’t get cut? I’m asking you, were there any that didn’t get cut? There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start. I think that the Joker… we did a lot of experimentation on the set, we explored a lot. There’s so much that we shot that’s not in the film.
“If I die anytime soon, it’s probably likely that it’ll surface somewhere. That’s the good news about the death of an actor is all that stuff seems to come out.”
The character seemed to completely disappear for the second half of the movie, and the way the film was cut, his presence honestly felt unneeded. He didn’t do anything to progress the story. It felt more as if the character was just there for a bit of shock factor, and for the publicity of, “Here is the first Joker after Ledger.”
This isn’t to say that Jared Leto did a bad job, I thoroughly did not enjoy his portrayal in all the right ways. His character was creepy and unnerving, and having a heavy theatre background, I could sense how into the character he was. It was incredible watching him, because it felt in no way that I was watching Jared Leto, I could only see the Joker. The ability to create such a verisimilitude amongst the audience is an incredible skill, especially when playing such a character.
Leto also has said that he wanted the film to be rated R, and I personally wish it was. I would love to see where his character would go with that much more freedom.
