A 27-year old professional footballer has quit playing soccer in order to play video games. And his game of choice? EA Sports FIFA. No, seriously. Wendell Lira is giving up his real-world sports career in order to pursue a virtual one.
Portuguese media reports that the decision was not a spontaneous one. Lira suffered repeated soccer-related injuries, leading to multiple surgeries, and it seems the life of a sporting star didn’t make him happy.
What does make him happy? The prospect of joining the FIFA eSports scene. Starting his own YouTube channel. Playing video games.
And before you think he’s quitting because he was no good, Lira won the FIFA Puskas Award for Goal of the Year in 2015, beating the likes of Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez. Alas, it seems his spinning bicycle kick will not be seen again, as Lira heads off to pursue his dream of becoming a “FIFA world champion”.
