One of the bombshells that Bethesda dropped back at E3 in June was the brand new Prey. At the time, we weren’t quite sure what it was – whether Arkane was working on a sequel or a remake… and it turns out the upcoming game is something else entirely.
Arkane Studios president and creative director Raphael Colantonio explains that the new Prey is a re-imagining of the IP, which actually has next to nothing to do with the original game.
This new video from Bethesda features Colantonio explaining a bit more about what’s in store, describing the game as a “hybrid” that pairs narrative with action and RPG elements.
You have lots of weapons, but you also have powers which you can learn from the aliens. While there are weapons on the space station, it is also a scientific area. So there will be a lot of interesting gadgets as well that are not meant for combat, but will somehow work out in combat.
It also sounds like Arkane has carried over more than a few ideas from the Dishonored series as well – choices you make in Prey will have significant impact on the rest of the game, so be careful how you play.
And oh, in case you missed it? Chris Avellone – former developer at Interplay, co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment, human stretch-goal – is also working on the title. It’s the latest in a remarkable list of games for Avellone, including Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, the Icewind Dale series, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Chamions of Norrath and Wasteland 2.
On paper, Prey is sounding pretty impressive… here’s hoping it can live up to our expectations. No release date yet for this one beyond “2017”, but we don’t see the hype dying down any time soon.
