Sega has announced, via Youtube videos on the “Sonic the Hedgehog” channel, that there will be two new games coming in 2017.
The first game, Sonic Mania, is a return to the original 2D style in honor of the 25th anniversary of the speedy spike-ball. The gameplay featured in the video appears to replicate the style of the original games, with new moves available for the iconic hedgehog. There will also be re-imagined stages from Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles. There will be three playable characters: Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. The game is being developed by SEGA of America in collaboration with PagodaWest Games and also Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley.
The trailer appears to be totally old-school, with chiptune music and blocky pixels galore. This could possibly be the breath of fresh air that any classic Sonic fans need as it rids itself of the over-complication of the more recent games, and returns to the classic and straight-forward style of the original speedy-runner.
The next game appears to be geared more towards the fans of the more recent 3D games, however the trailer is much more vague than that of Sonic Mania.
The main theme is, “Join the resistance.” In the trailer, some sore of robotic (Robotnik, perhaps) enemy appears to be destroying the city. As Sonic mounts his attack upon the enemy, he is saved by classic-Sonic. Seeing as the game is from the makers of Sonic Generations, this method of gameplay makes sense. The two blue blurs then dash towards the robot.
The game is expected around the holiday season of 2017, and will released for PS4, PC, Xbox and the upcoming Nintendo console, NX.
For Sonic fans (like myself), the excitement is real.
