Nintendo is set to release its next console, the NX, in March 2017, but to tide over fans of its classic library, the company has released something a little different: a mini, HDMI supported, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES); pre-loaded with 30 original NES games.
The Donkey Kong Jr. version of the 80s brick is a plug-in-play system and is described by the company as a “near-identical, mini replica” version of the original NES console. The mini-doppelganger will come with a replica version of the original NES controller, in addition to being packed with some of the greatest titles from the system’s library.
Some of the pre-loaded games are best played with a partner and Nintendo acknowledges this, with the company confirming that the replica will support two-player functionality for games sporting that mode; with a second controller available for purchase for $9.99. Players with a Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro can also use those, according to the company.
The mini-NES is meant to grab onto the nostalgia of playing game sin the 8bit era, according to Nintendo of America president, Reggie Fils-Aime, which comes with its own set of limitations. Players will not be able to connect the games to their Nintendo accounts and- somewhat obviously- there will not be any online connectivity.
The NES Classic will be available to purchase November 11 for $59.99 USD (or $99.95 AUD). All of the titles pre-loaded on the system are listed below.
