Representation in video games is an important step in making sure that all gamers feel welcome in their hobby. Sometimes the representation comes from the developers themselves, and other times it comes from the gamers in the way of mods. With Grand Theft Auto’s controversial opinion of people of colour, women and the LBGTQ+ community, a group of modders decided to make a change for the better.
Stockholm Pride, the largest pride festival in Scandinavia since 1998, has just released a trailer for their Grand Theft Auto V mod, “Los Santos Pride.”
In the trailer, it shows Los Santos residents wearing pride shirts, people dancing on floats and on the streets and your favourite GTA protagonists dancing in pride colours.
Created by Stockholm based advertising agency Garbergs, along with popular mod makers, JulioNiB, TheFriedTurkey, Merfish and TheNathanNS. The mod is a labour of love and was made for free, says Stockholm Pride. “Los Santos Pride is created for Stockholm Pride. The project is pro-bono with no financial incentive or other benefits for anyone involved.”
Lately, the world has seen some horrible crimes against the LBGTQ+ community, including the shooting in Orlando at LBGTQ+ club Pulse, Stockholm Pride wish to honour the victims, “We’ve made the parade indestructible. Not to moralize, but rather to show that love will always triumph over hate.“
