You’d be forgiven for thinking that Blizzard has its hands full with the runaway success that is Overwatch, the ongoing updates for Hearthstone and the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft… but it turns out there’s another much-beloved franchise that’s still getting some attention. The studio’s jobs page lists a few openings for something new, labelled simply “Unannounced Project – Diablo”.
The jobs wanted include animators, artists, and even the Game Director, with descriptions sure to whet any RPG-lover’s appetite. My favourite is for the Senior VFX Artist, which seems to have another name within the company:
You have a passion for bringing the Diablo universe to life through visceral action. You live on a rich diet of fire, explosions, blood, guts, and exploding bloody guts that are on fire. Your well of creative ideas for how enemies spawn, attack, and die never runs dry. You can translate design concepts into juicy, eye-catching visuals with a stylized, hand-crafted touch and a focus on feel.
As a “Combat Imagineer” your DNA is part artist, part designer, and part tech wizard. You see ways to make crazy ideas happen. You thrive in a busy, collaborative, cross-discipline environment of peers who are insanely passionate about the dark medieval worlds of Diablo.
Blizzard is looking for developers who “love dark medieval worlds” and want to explore the “countless stories left to tell in the Diablo universe”. It’s not the first time a Diablo-related job has popped up on the Help Wanted page, but it is the first time things have referred to the future of the franchise.
It’s a nice time to hear rumblings of a new game. While the last major release was Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls (and the Ultimate Evil Edition) in 2014, earlier this year saw an official patch for Diablo 2 – the first in nearly five years.
Grain of salt – Blizzard is constantly working on a number of different projects, and that includes those in the very, very early stages of development. These jobs might be working on a new Diablo. They could be working on a remastered version of Diablo 2, or a much-desired revamp of the original. The project could be something completely different that simply uses elements of the Diablo universe – Blizzard’s already done that several times, with World of Warcraft, Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm. At this stage, we simply don’t know, and the publisher’s going to keep quiet until there’s something to talk about. We could hear something at BlizzCon later this year, but… I wouldn’t hold my breath.
