In one of the most appropriate bits of casting we’ve seen in a long time, Silicon Valley’s T.J. Miller has joined the cast of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One adaptation. Miller is set to star as a troll – in the internet sense, not in the good-luck sense or the under-bridge sense.
The comedian has lined up the role of i-R0k, one of the more frustrating characters from Ernest Cline’s novel.
If I didn’t spend so much time offline, getting laid I’d probably know just as much worthless shit as you two do.
It’s a perfect role for the actor, who’s made a name for himself playing, well, annoying characters – Miller has previously graced the big screen as Weasel in Deadpool, Fred in Big Hero 6 and Ranger Jones in Yogi Bear.
i-R0k plays a small, but crucial part in the book. It will be interesting to see whether it’s expanded for the film, or whether Miller’s griefer is kept short and sweet.
Ready Player One is set in a virtual world called Oasis. The enigmatic founder of the game (played by Mark Rylance) has died and left his entire fortune as the grand reward at the end of a massive, in-game treasure hunt. Teenager Wade Watts (aka Parzival) has his eyes on the prize, but there are plenty of others trying to stop him.
The cast includes newcomers Tye Sheridan (Cyclops from X-Men: Apocalypse) as Parzival and Olivia Cooke (Emma from tv’s Bates Motel) as Art3mis, alongside veterans Simon Pegg and Ben Mendelsohn.
Filming is set to start in late June, thanks to Warner Bros and Village Roadshow – Ready Player One is due out in 2018.
