Gears of War 4 multiplayer gets a little help from Splash Damage

Splash Damage, the studio behind Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Brink and Dirty Bomb hasn’t given up on the Gears of War franchise despite finishing work on Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. It’s just been revealed that the UK studio is also working with The Coalition to bring multiplayer to Gears of War 4.

Gears of War veteran Rod Fergusson spoke to Game Informer about the relationship:

They’re helping with a lot of the level design stuff, especially with meshing of multiplayer maps, we’re tapping into the expertise they got from Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. They also have a lot of expertise with online systems, in terms of matchmaking from Ultimate Edition. They basically had to rewrite for Xbox One, between us and them, the whole matchmaking sub-system… when you get a strategic partner like Splash Damage, we talk about training up our own team on Gears, but when you have another team that’s trained up on Gears, we definitely want to work with them as much as possible.

We also know a little bit more about multiplayer: You’ll be able to jump in on the action real soon now, with Xbox kicking off a multiplayer beta in April.
There will be five playable characters – JD Fenix, Kait and Del, as well as Reyna (Kait’s mother and leader of the Outsiders), and Oscar (Kait’s uncle and former Gear soldier).
There’s one Coalition developer whose sole job is to work full time on the eSports side of things.
…and yes, the game will run at 60fps, and has its own dedicated servers. Hooray!
