If imitation is the highest form of flattery, then Naughty Dog has just paid Ubisoft a huge compliment. Tucked away in the brand new story trailer for Uncharted 4 (which is ridiculously beautiful, by the way), is a piece of concept art from Assassin’s Creed IV. This isn’t a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, either: It’s framed and hanging on Nathan Drake’s wall.
Embarrassingly, the slip-up was first acknowledged by Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Head of Content, Aymar Azaizia, who posted it to Twitter (and was promptly retweeted by the official Assassin’s Creed account).
Ubisoft developer Alex Hutchinson – director of both Assassin’s Creed III and Far Cry 4 – also noticed the similarities, and took the opportunity to have a dig at Jonathan Cooper, a former Ubisoft colleague now working at Naughty Dog (who also happens to be one of Hutchinson’s good friends).
Y’see, it was Cooper who made a big deal about Ubisoft’s comments that women were “too difficult to animate” in Assassin’s Creed Unity, and Hutchinson couldn’t resist returning the jab.
But! As quickly as this incident flared up, it was over. While Ubisoft refrained from making any official comment, Naughty Dog was quick to tidy up its mess, swapping out the old trailer and replacing it with a new one (complete with a different picture on the wall). And while the studio could probably have done this silently, Director of Communications Arne Meyer has written an open letter to fans:
We want to sincerely apologize to everyone at Ubisoft, the Assassin’s Creed team, the original artist, and our fans.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is due out April 26, exclusively for PlayStation 4.
