If I were a betting man (which would require a couple of significant changes to my person), I would have put money on Rise of the Tomb Raider receiving the Writers Guild Award for outstanding writing in a video game.
If I were a betting man, I’d have walked away with a little extra pocket money, as Lara Croft’s latest adventure has indeed taken out this year’s prize!
To be eligible, a game had to be released between December 1, 2014 and November 30, 2015 – and credited writers must be (or must have applied to be) members of the WGA Videogame Writers Caucus at the time the scripts were submitted. Plus, importantly, it’s not a free-for-all – the awards are very much an opt-in process, so it’s only open to studios who want to be considered.
Realistically, Tomb Raider’s success wasn’t a foregone conclusion. The awards shortlist also included Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Pillars of Eternity, so there was some pretty serious competition.
Congratulations to Lead Narrative Designer John Stafford, Narrative Designer Cameron Suey, Lead Writer Rhianna Pratchett and Additional Writer Philip Gelatt!
