Your next movie night is sorted: Pokémon: The First Movie is now available via Pokémon TV. You can stream it directly in your browser right now, and – yes – it’s completely free!
Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, had ambitious plans to take over the world, involving his latest experiment, a powerful clone of Mew—Mewtwo. Mewtwo is very powerful, and also very smart—smart enough to not want to be controlled by Giovanni. It escaped from the lab, and now Mewtwo begins to concoct its own scheme, clandestinely inviting a number of Pokémon Trainers to the ultimate test. Of course, if it’s an event for talented Trainers, Ash Ketchum will be right in the front row!
Pokémon TV is the official streaming service for the pocket monsters, and you can access it either online or as an app for your smartphone (both iOS and Android).
This isn’t the first time Pokémon: The First Movie has popped up recently. The film made it into Aussie cinemas late last year, and has also turned up on iTunes, Amazon and Google Play for a cost.
There are two questions we need to address:
Firstly, yes! We’ve checked this out already and it is very watchable from Australia, no pesky region-locking keeping us from Pikachu!
Secondly, no. Pikachu’s Vacation is not included. The fan-favourite short film that accompanied The First Movie in its original cinematic release hasn’t made it to Pokémon TV, so there’s still no way to watch that one online for free.
This release is of course part of the Pokémon 20th anniversary celebrations, which will also see the original Game Boy games released on 3DS Virtual Console, a special edition 3DS and a year-long distribution event.
