It’s been a while since gamers put their boots on the streets of occupied France, stormed the forests of Bastogne or avoided the torrent of steel on the beaches of Normandy. Developer Bulkhead Interactive (Pneuma: Breath of Life) think it’s time we deployed again, launching a Kickstarter for their squad based WWII shooter Battalion 1944.
Currently in development for PC and current-gen consoles, the developers of Battalion 1944 boast authentic and highly detailed real-world locations and era-accurate weaponry.
Whilst cowering behind a felled tree at Bastogne, you’ll have a familiar arsenal at your disposal including the likes of the German standard service bolt-action rifle Karabiner 98 kurz, the US .30 caliber semi-automatic rifle M1 and the Thompson submachine gun.
Where Battalion 1944 plans to separate itself from previous WWII titles- and modern shooters in general- is in its gameplay. The infantry based shooter will feature a competitive multiplayer environment where players join a battalion and compete season to season. Teamwork is stressed and success in camaraderie will earn players cosmetic rewards, weapons and accessories; and global standings- viewable through the BattleRank competition system.
The developers have also emphasized a return to pure skill based gameplay, choosing to exclude things such as perks, buffs and abilities.
We believe your skill should be determined by your play, not through unfair overpowered unlocks & abilities. Battalion learns from the skill based gameplay of classic competitive shooters.
Battalion 1944 is currently in development using Unreal Engine 4, with Bulkhead stating Call of Duty 2 and Day of Defeat as inspiration.
A Kickstarter has been launched to assist with the game’s development, with Bulkhead seeking £100,000 in crowdfunding to help with the project. At time of writing 1171 backers have pledged £32,771 with 29 days remaining.
