Bizarre card game Exploding Kittens is about to make the leap into your pocket, with a smartphone release hitting iOS this week. It’s been developed in conjunction with the original creators, and will only cost you a few bucks (unless you want to fork out to make things a bit prettier).
It’s not the first time the team behind Exploding Kittens has worked on video games – two of the three-man team were on the original Xbox Team. Elan Lee was Xbox chief design officer, while Shane Small was Xbox Entertainment principle art director. The third creator? Matthew Inman, better known for his work on The Oatmeal.
About a year ago, the trio launched a Kickstarter campaign asking for $10,000 to make a game where players take turns drawing cards from a stack, until someone picks up an exploding kitten and loses the game. They raised that $10k in just 20 minutes, quickly becoming the highest-funded card game. But the success didn’t stop there! Nearly 220,000 backers pledged their funds to the game, raising $8,782,571 – the most highly-funded gaming project in Kickstarter history (beating hackable Android console Ouya by more than $150,000).
Now, if you’re not keen on carrying a deck around with you, you’ve got another option. Exploding Kittens will get mess all over the iTunes App Store on January 21 in the US, which likely means some time January 22 for those of us in the land Down Under.
