Now, it’s no secret that I have rather little love for DC‘s cinematic universe, on more than one occasion teaming said movies in sentences with verbs such as overrated, bland and joyless. After seeing what they- and by they I mean David Goyer- did to characters that are meant to be colorful and larger than life, I was ready to write Suicide Squad off as another gritty slog, where the eccentric and flamboyant protagonists were gray scaled into nothingness. Well, turns out I may have jumped the gun…maybe.
Today DC dropped the first proper trailer for Suicide Squad during their TV event special DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League. The trailer, which you can watch above, opens to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and introduces us to the rag-tag squad of villains forced to be “heroes”. The first thing that hit me is that the tone is…interesting. The visual style fits very much into the DC filmic aesthetic- by which I mean it’s dark, drab and lacks colour- but at the same time it seems to be somewhat jovial and- dare I say- self aware; reminding me of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
If this is actually the case- and not just clever editing and the choice of an amazing background track-, then DC may have a decent film on their hands; which gives me hope for their future endeavors.
Anywho, Directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as the Joker and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on August 5.
