If you’ve ever wanted to play as a Pokémon, your time is (nearly) at hand. Pokkén Tournament launches in Japan on March 18 – and Aussie/NZ audiences don’t have to wait long, with a local launch planned for just one day later!
Mark your calendars: The 3D fighting game (geddit? Pokémon + Tekken?) will hit Wii U March 19, bringing with it a whole new perspective on your favourite Pokémon characters. There are 16 pocket monsters featured in the game at launch, with more to be added over time.
We’re waiting to hear from Nintendo whether local gamers will have a chance to get their hands on that fancy Japanese arcade controller, but even if we don’t get that one, we still get cool stuff. The first production run version of the game is bundled with a nifty Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card, which you can use to unlock a playable Shadow Mewtwo character in-game, just by tapping the Wii U GamePad controller.
After launching in Japanese arcades in July last year, Pokkén Tournament actually faced an uncertain future – one arcade credit could give a gamer more than half an hour of gametime, meaning it wasn’t a terribly profitable title in traditional arcade spaces. Rather than scrapping the project, the game is now headed to living rooms via the Wii U, where it doesn’t matter how long you play – you’ve still gotta catch ’em all!
