The original Metal Gear Solid can easy be considered one of the greatest and most influential games of all time, with, what’s at its core, still standing up today; even if its early 3D visuals don’t. Cue Airam Hernandez and his team of indie developers, who are currently giving MGS an HD overhaul in Unreal Engine 4– with the project aptly named Shadow Moses.
The team behind Shadow Moses released the first full trailer for the remake yesterday, which put some of the source materials most iconic environments front and centre; including the office in which you fight Psycho Mantis; the passageway to the first encounter Sniper Wolf; and the hangar holding Metal Gear Rex.
According to the developers, Shadow Moses has been in development since October 2015, when the group first posted artwork to its Facebook page. Today, lead developer Airam Hernandez posted a message to Facebook regarding the legalities of the project. Hernandez acknowledged that Konami owns the rights to the Metal Gear franchise, and has not, at this time, given permission for the remake to continue.
We just need to clarify something:
Konami owns the MGS copyright and therefore sooner or later we will need their full permission.
We have therefore chosen to openly share this project from the beginning so that we can deal with any issues that may arise as they come.
We believe this is better than putting years of work into a project only to get it shut down.
Please, respect this decision.
Thanks for your attention,
With the trailer having racked up about 100,000 views across Facebook and YouTube in less than 24 hours, Konami surely knows this project exists; and with their track record of late I expect a cease and desist to follow. So, watch it whilst you can.
