SMITE World Championships line up a big weekend of eSports action

Starting 2016 with a bang, the second SMITE World Championship kicks off on Thursday (January 7) in Atlanta, Georgia. The world’s best SMITE gamers will converge on the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta from January 7-10, battling it out for their share of a $1m prize pool. And it’s not just PC excitement, either: The event also sees the first SMITE on Xbox One Invitational. Four of the world’s best console teams go head to head for a $150,000 prize pool.

Not familiar with SMITE? Here’s a brand new cinematic trailer, launched to celebrate the upcoming championships.

If you can’t get to Atlanta but want to stay up to date with what’s going on, tune in to SMITE on Twitch. Pay close attention on Thursday at 11am Atlanta time (What’s that in my timezone?), when Hi-Rez will present its keynote address. Expect details and announcements for SMITE, a discussion on new FPS Paladins, and upcoming mobile game Jetpack Fighter – before everything kicks over to the SWC action, live from the show floor!

For more details on who’s competing, and when they’ll be doing it, head to the SMITE World Championship website. Placement Rounds kick off on Thursday, with the Quarter Finals on Friday, Semis on Saturday and – of course – the Grand Finals are on Sunday, for both the Xbox One Invitational (11am local) and the PC tournament (3:30pm local).

Oceanic champions Avant Garde play NA runner-up Enemy in the quick-fire third Placement Round, at 1:30pm local time (5:30am NSW/Vic/Tas, 5am SA, 4:30am Qld, 2:30am WA, 7:30am New Zealand) – set your alarms, folks – it’s a big weekend of eSports!
