Straight out of the gate, I’m going to say take this one with not just a grain of salt but more like a whole fucking quarry. The Witcher 3 developer CD Projekt RED has apparently ramped up production on Cyberpunk 2077, with the company aiming for a late 2016 release; according to a report from Gamereactor Germany.
The report cites an unnamed source at the studio who says the game is currently in development for PC, and that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions are “more than likely,” adding that Sony and Microsoft might be trying to secure it as a console exclusive.
This seems a little off for a few reasons. Firstly, CD Projekt RED have stated numerous times that we can expect to learn more about Cyberpunk in 2017. Unless that was a tongue in cheek release date confirmation, I would stick to their tentative timetable over unsubstantiated rumor.
Secondly, when we talked to Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz at PAX AUS earlier this year, he mentioned that the team were still figuring out how to develop the shooting mechanics; as this was the first time they had taken on such an endeavor.
Lastly- and most boring and pragmatic- , the Witcher 3’s second expansion, Blood and Wine, doesn’t release until Q1 2016 and having team members working on that whilst your gearing up for a huge release seems foolish.
Anyhow, take it for what it is. All I know is that I’m psyched for Cyberpunk off CD’s track record alone and am happy to wait as long as it takes.
