You wanted more Psychonauts? Here! Have more Psychonauts! That seems to be the train of though coming from studio Double Fine and creator Tim Schafer, and I for one am not complaining!
The announcement of a fully fledged sequel to the 2005 cult hit was unveiled during the The Game Awards a few days back, with Double Fine revealing they will be handling the project using a split of crowdfunding and traditional funding. Unsurprisingly, the collective internet heeded Double Fine’s call, with the crowdfunded component having reached $1.8 million of its $3.3 million at the time of writing.
And the Psychonauts metaphysical hype train doesn’t stop there my friends, with Double Fine also announcing a VR prequel to Psychonauts 2 at PlayStation’s Experience event over the weekend. Titled Psychonauts: In The Rhombus of Ruin, the game is set to bridge the first game and the newly announced sequel; and will see protagonist Raz embark on a mission to rescue Truman Zanotto.
Speaking to GameSpot in an interview, game director Tim Schafer explained, “the player is going to go on this virtual reality rescue mission to rescue Truman Zanotto. They’re going to be using clairvoyance to move around, and telekinesis and pyrokinesis, a lot of ‘esises,’ and psi powers to explore the kidnapper’s lair and free Truman.”
This VR experience will be a standalone title and is not part of Double Fine’s crowdfunding campaign for Psychonauts 2; with Schafer quick to state “It’s not a VR treatment of the original game or VR treatment of the second game, it is its own unique content”
Psychonauts: In The Rhombus of Ruin is slated for a release the second half of 2016.
