Just Cause 3: Are all these explosions affecting framerates on console?

Just Cause 3 is out now, and – predictably – the explosion-fest has delighted the fans and divided the critics. The official fan-created video is available now for your viewing pleasure (maybe to watch while installing?), but we’ve already seen some not-so-great observations.

This EXPLOSION RAP TRAILER is from fan CoolTwinSkittles, who was picked from 1200 entries showcasing the talent of the Just Cause community. The team at Square Enix did not have an easy job picking a winner, but the “energy, humour and general quality” of CoolTwinSkittles’ entry made him a panel favourite.

Just Cause 3 launches on December 1 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One (that’s today in some parts of the world), but from the sounds of things it might not be a bad idea to hold off for a little while.

Apparently, the game’s huge open world (much of it combustible) is causing issues when it comes to framerates. Early reports suggest that neither the PS4 (1080p) nor Xbox One (900p) versions are able to maintain 30fps, dropping in some cases to 20fps during larger explosions.

They do look good, however – Digital Foundry found that both console versions look as good as a high-spec PC… but if you’re running a mid-tier machine, you can expect another drop in framerate.

This is the sort of stuff that Avalanche Studios will be working towards fixing – the developers might have been a little too ambitious with the amount of things that go boom.
