Beer update! Call of Duty: Black Hops III – Midnight Pale Ale out now

Last week, we learned about a mysterious beer brewed to tie in with Call of Duty: Black Ops III. Now, we have some more details – including where you can buy this Australian-only beverage.

Call of Duty: Black Hops III – Midnight Pale Ale is a limited edition world first beer created by Gold Coast craft brewers Black Hops Brewing – and no, the name’s no coincidence. Co-founder Eddie Oldfield explains:

Black Hops Brewing is an ironic name because we’re intentionally the least covert operation; we even put our business plan online to help others learn how to get started. We love the craft brewery scene and hopefully we can help grow it by making it easier for others to get involved. We’re massive Call of Duty fans too, so our name is also a subtle nod to the Black Ops franchise.

Oldfield and two friends, Michael McGovern and Dan Norris, started the brewery almost exactly one year ago. Since then, it’s grown from home brewing to being sold in local pubs to now partnering with one of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises, Call of Duty.

Says Michael “Govs” McGovern, Head Brewer:

When Activision first contacted us we thought it was a hoax and had no idea that would turn into this amazing partnership. We love beer and we love video games, especially Call of Duty, so when the opportunity to create Black Hops III to celebrate the launch of the new game came up, we jumped at it.

The beer itself has been crafted to reflect “both the creativity of the brewery and Call of Duty: Black Ops III”. Rather than the traditional dark ale or stout that many had assumed, the Black Hops III beer is actually a classic American pale ale, painted black thanks to the use of special ingredients and clever brewing techniques.

The end result is a drink that is “black in colour, but light and refreshing like a traditional pale ale, perfect for the Aussie summer,” according to Govs. That darkness comes from “midnight wheat”, a roasted de-husked wheat grain from the US, which produces a rich, dark beer without the traditional dark ale bitterness.

…intrigued? The good news is, if you’re in Australia, you can pick this one up online for as long as stocks last. It’s available exclusively through in both six-packs and 24-bottle cartons. Order today, and you should have yours by November 6, just in time for the launch of the game!

(Meanwhile, Beer Bud also offers Beer and Cider Advent Calendars, which sound pretty neat. Black Hops also offers a delicious range of beers in addition to their gaming tie-in.)
