Romero's Aftermath: 100,000 horror fans join in 24hrs

Romero’s Aftermath has been playable for a week now in open beta, and more than 300,000 fans have flocked to try out this new free-to-play (free-to-win!) survival horror – more than a third of them in the first 24 hours. Whether you’re into PvP, PvE, crafting, base building, customisation or simply exploring the in-game world, this new project from George C. Romero promises gameplay “for every type of player”.

…but first, we should address just who is behind the game. George C. Romero is not George A. Romero, the creator of Night of the Living Dead.

George C. is George A.’s son, who started his career as “G. Cameron Romero” before deciding to capitalise on his birthright.

So – George C. is working together with indie publisher Free Reign Entertainment on the game, which claims to be the only free-to-win survival horror MMO on the market. The massive open world is full of zombies, towns, deserts, forests and other survivalists, and the team is proud to point out that “you don’t need to commit any money” to try your luck.

Adam Skidmore, Design Lead at Free Reign Entertainment explains:

Since entering Closed Beta a few months ago, we received positive feedback from early players and with their help we built what we think is the most robust survival horror game to date. There are a bevy of experiences in Aftermath and we think that contributed to the rapid influx of more than 100,000 users in the first 24-hours. It shows that Aftermath brings a freshness to the genre that the community was seeking.

We haven’t yet had a chance to try out Romero’s Aftermath, but we’re definitely intrigued by the concept. If you’d like to dip your toe into the survival horror MMO waters, you can do so right now! Head to, register an account and play the game for free. And then come back and tell us what it’s like!
