Retro hero enters endless maze in Pac-Man 256

Pac-Man is back. Sure, some might say he never really left, but Bandai Namco and Aussie developer Hipster Whale have teamed up to create PAC-MAN 256, a new bite-sized take on the franchise.

Hipster Whale director Matt Hall has been struggling to keep things a secret:

We were super excited the day Daisuke and the team at BANDAI NAMCO invited us to work on PAC-MAN. Now the day is here people can play our tribute to the PAC-MAN legacy, PAC-MAN 256!

Matt (and the team that created Crossy Road) is celebrating the icon’s 35th anniversary alongside developers from Bandai Namco Studios Vancouver. The new-look mobile game is a bit different – your task is to navigate the familiar yellow fellow through an endless maze, being chased by “hordes” of colourful ghosts, collecting delicious-looking fruit and avoiding the mysterious (and intentional!) in-game 256 glitch. Yes, there are power pellets – but there are more than that, including tornados, stealth and laser beams!

Tatsuya Kubota, Head of Mobile & Web Gaming at Bandai NAMCO Entertainment Europe S.A.S. continues:

After months of hard work, our fruitful 3-way cooperation finally sees the light! PAC-MAN 256 is available on App Store, Google Play and Amazon stores as we have worked on making the game as accessible to as many players as possible on the same day. Also, we have been listening to our players and are excited to announce that in PAC-MAN 256, players will have the option to buy the game outright, removing all Free To Play elements. We are confident that our old fans and new players alike will be absolutely amazed by our new creation.

Pac-Man 256 is available today on just about all available mobile devices, and it is free to play (unless you want to hand over some cash). While the game is “finished”, the development teams are promising plenty of updates, so you never know quite what might end up in-game.
