What is Blizzard's unannounced Diablo project?

Feel free to take this with a grain of salt, but job listings over at Blizzard suggest that there might be a new project happening in the Diablo universe.

Specifically, the developer’s careers site contains a job listing looking for an art director to work on an “unannounced project” under the Diablo heading.

Blizzard Entertainment, the developer of the most epic games in the world, is seeking an exceptionally skilled and passionate art director to help develop Blizzard’s next hit game!

The successful applicant will have “a passion for games with a deep understanding of the Diablo franchise”, bringing outstanding communication skills, strong leadership and inspiring artistic vision to the project. You’ll need to have some serious experience under your belt, too (in both 2D and 3D art assets), as well as a proven track record of shipping AAA products.

It’s the only reference to the mysterious project on the page, prompting the rumour mill into overdrive. Given that it took nearly 12 years for Blizzard to release Diablo 3 after the success of Diablo 2, even the most enthusiastic of fans is doubtful that it will be an all-new game. Instead, the loudest theory is that it’s a new expansion for Diablo 3, to join Reaper of Souls.

Whatever it is, Blizzard has proven that it can remain ridiculously tight-lipped on projects when it wants to, so we’re not expecting to hear anything about this one any time soon. There’s always a chance something might be revealed at BlizzCon in November (especially now the World of Warcraft expansion has already been revealed), but we’re not holding our breaths just yet.
