The International 5 names new Dota 2 champion

The International has come and gone again for another year, and American team Evil Geniuses have come out the winners, more than $6.6 million richer, just for playing Dota 2.

The best-of-five Grand Finals ended 3-1, with EG soundly defeating dark horse CDEC 3-1 – and it was the second time they’d met this tournament.

Their earlier clash had gone the other way, with CDEC coming out of nowhere to knock EG down to the Lower Bracket in just one of the tournament’s big surprises, forcing them to face LGD Gaming in the first set of finals.

Another shock came when last year’s winner Newbee were the first team eliminated from this year’s competition, with Invictus Gaming and Na’vi soon to follow.

Evil Geniuses were fan favourites going into the competition, and are now the first North American team to take home the big prize – a significant share of that massive $18.4 million prize pool. CDEC Gaming will take $2.8 million home with them to China.
