Gears of War: Ultimate Edition now contains the whole series

If you were among the many gamers disappointed that Gears of War: Ultimate Edition was only the first game in the series, prepare to be pleased. Microsoft and The Coalition have confirmed that the remaster will now include the entire series to date – but there’s a catch.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition

The extra games are thanks to the Xbox 360 / Xbox One backwards compatibility announced at E3, so you’ll be getting downloadable copies of the additional titles, rather than more discs.

If you want to land your own copy of the original Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgment, you’ll need to log into Gears of War: Ultimate Edition sometime between August 25 and December 31.

…and even then, the games won’t be playable just yet. Instead, they’ll be added to the Backwards Compatibility library when the service launches later this year. (The original Gears of War is currently available to those people in the Xbox One Preview Program.)

Of course, if you already own Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 or Gears of War: Judgment on Xbox 360, you’ll be able to play them on Xbox One as well without any additional purchase.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is headed to Xbox One from August 25 – we’re also promised a PC release, but have no dates for that one just yet.
