Blizzard artist memorialised in new Diablo III cube

Blizzard has memorialised a fallen comrade with an in-game Diablo III tribue to Kevin Kanai Griffith, an artist who passed away from a rare cancer in October 2014.

Griffith had been living with Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma for two years, continuing to work on Diablo III “as much as he was able” while undergoing treatment – he pioneered the day/night cycles in Adventure mode as well as the in-game weather system, among other environmental features.

His spirit and legacy will always live on in the many games he’s touched with his stunning art, as well as the hearts of every individual who had the honor of knowing him.

Fans of the Diablo series will be familiar with the Horadic Cube from Diablo 2 – this is that item’s spiritual successor (technically it’s a precursor). Owning the cube means you will be able to extract Legendary powers from items and then equip those powers without needing the original item. You’ll also be able to reforge Ancient and Legendary equipment, should you feel the need.

Kanai’s Cube will be introduced officially in Patch 2.3.0 for Diablo III – but it’s available right now on the Public Test Realm if you want to jump in a little early.

It’s also not the only tribute to Griffith – following the artist’s passing, his family and friends created the charity Gamers for Good, designed to “provide charitable assistance for and in the name of Gamers” as well as educating people about game development as a positive part of our society.
