Nintendo confirmed the death of president Iwata via a brief message on its investor relations site.
The statement reads:
Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.
Iwata first joined Nintendo in 1980 as part of HAL Laboratory, where he worked on titles such as Balloon Fight and Earthbound. He became a Director of Nintendo in 2000, ascending to President in 2002, and CEO of Nintendo of America in 2013.
More importantly than job titles, Iwata was the face of Nintendo to many fans around the globe. Renowned for his playfulness and genuine love for what he did, Iwata was more than a suit and he will be greatly missed.
Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda will take the helm at Nintendo until Iwata’s successor is chosen.
