Telltale Games has crashed Mojang‘s party, stealing the limelight at Minecon to highlight its own game – Minecraft: Story Mode. We’ve known about the game for a while, but this is our first real look at what’s in store.
Minecraft: Story Mode is a five-part episodic game series set in the world of Minecraft but featuring all its own characters, themes and its own story, inspired by the do-it-yourself concepts shown in the blocky world builder.
Kevin Bruner, CEO and co-founder of Telltale Games says:
We’ve worked closely with the amazing team at Mojang to ensure this story is a natural fit for the Minecraft world fans already know and love. As Jesse, players will steer their own path through a tale of adventure and survival; all brought to life by an all-star cast. Through Telltale’s choice-based gameplay and a story spanning from the Nether to the Farlands, the End, and beyond, we can’t wait for fans to experience this new take on the beloved world of Minecraft.
The Order of the Stone are four adventurers – Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer and Architect – who slayed an Elder Dragon. This team is held in an almost religious reverance by Jesse and his group of friends, who get together at EnderCon (yep) to pay their respects, only to discover that something pretty serious has gone wrong. Jesse – and his friends – must journey to find The Order of the Stone and save their world from oblivion!
You play as Jesse, who is voiced by Patton Oswalt, and play alongside a pretty stellar voice cast including Brian Posehn, Ashley Johnson, Scott Porter, Martha Plimpton, Dave Fennoy, Corey Feldman, Billy West, and Paul Reubens – with more casting details to be revealed before release.
The interactive storytellers at Telltale are giving players the chance to explore their own unique interpretation of the Minecraft universe. They’ve crafted a story that follows the logic of Minecraft, but still manages to feel original. It’s actually pretty funny too. And the pig is adorable. We’re super excited about players digging deeper into the world of Minecraft: Story Mode later this year.
Minecraft: Story Mode is entirely separate from the core Minecraft game. You do not need to own a copy of the original – or to have even played it – in order to enjoy Telltale‘s offering, which will be available “later this year” as a digital download for PC, Mac, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and both iOS and Android.
