Baldur's Gate countdown teases something new

Following on from the successes of the Enhanced Editions of both Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II, it looks like developer Beamdog is working on something new in the franchise, replacing all of the company’s websites with a mysterious countdown.

What is this all ticking down to?

What is this all ticking down to?

In January, we were told the studio was not working on Baldur’s Gate 3 technically, but another project, codenamed Adventure Y that should fit in neatly between the first two games. It’s being developed using the Infinity Engine, so should look (and feel!) like the old games, and has been in the works for quite a while now.

Ben Arledge, a writer on the project, explains:

We’d be lying if we said we never think about doing a Baldur’s Gate III game, so we won’t say that. But we will say there’s nothing in the works yet regarding BGIII or a 5th edition game. That doesn’t mean the opportunity will never arise, though, so we’re preparing by starting a tabletop 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons game here in the office.

Beamdog lead designer Phillip Daigle has thrown a little confusion into the mix, observing the change has hit “all of our game sites”, not just those relating to Baldur’s Gate, but the use of the #BaldursGate hashtag does suggest we’re looking at something new from the series.

BG:EE Creative Director Trent Oster also backs this up, dragging Mass Effect composer Sam Hulick into the mix by confirming it’s “only 13 days until we can play people some of the new awesome”.

By our calculations, the countdown is ticking over until July 9 – mark your calendars!
