36 Heavy Rain + Beyond: Two Souls to hit PS4

We might not have been given any hints about a new Quantic Dream game at E3 this year, but Sony has quietly made an announcement that should make fans pretty happy anyway. Both Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls are headed to PS4 real soon now.

If you’ve never played it, Heavy Rain is considered by many to be the first game to capture the “interactive drama” market back in 2010. It’s far from perfect, but the story of a father who would do anything for his son is definitely worth exploring (or exploring again, if you’ve already finished it).

The game makes innovative use of the Dualshock’s motion-sensing abilities, meaning that you can brush your teeth in-game just by waggling the controller. That, plus the knife-edge tension of the story of the Origami Killer, make Heavy Rain a must-play.

We never got a direct sequel to Heavy Rain, but three years later, spiritual sequel Beyond: Two Souls popped up as one of the last big releases for the PS3, and captured everybody all over again.

Starring Ellen Page as Jodie Holmes and Willem Dafoe as a paranormal researcher, the game is a curious tale of a girl with a psychic link to a separate soul – the ghost-like Aiden. The PS4 version of the game will feature a new gameplay mode, where you can play Beyond: Two Souls in chronological order, following Jodie from a curious young girl to a powerful woman. If you’d prefer, you can switch back to the non-linear narrative of the PS3 version, jumping from chapter to chapter as was originally intended.

As is tradition for Quantic Dream, both games polarised the gaming community on release, proving to be titles that people either loved or hated – so if you’d like an opportunity to find out which side of the fence you’re on, here’s your chance!

At launch, both games will be available as a standalone digital release for those who just want one or the other. If you want both, there’s a two-game bundle on offer, either digitally or in a boxed copy. And, in a unique twist, this re-release is currently only planned for Europe and the PAL region – meaning North American gamers just have to miss out.
