Insomniac has released a first-look at Ratchet & Clank for PlayStation 4, interspersing the brand new trailer with snippets of footage from the upcoming film as well as the gameplay. If you were expecting a simple “up-res” of the PS2 game, you need to think bigger.
James Stevenson, Insomniac‘s community lead on the project says that the team specifically did not want to just make a polished-up version of what had come before.
We started out thinking of Ratchet & Clank (PS4) as a “re-imagining” of the 2002 original, revised to tie in with the deeper version of Ratchet’s origin story as seen in the film. We envisioned a curated Ratchet & Clank experience that borrowed from the spirit of the classic PS2 titles while infusing some of the best elements from the Ratchet & Clank Future games.
What the team has ended up with is an all-new game, with modern controls, several new planets as well as both new and updated gameplay segments. Clank’s gameplay has been completely overhauled, new boss fights and flight sequences added to the mix, and of course everything has been deliberately crafted to look stunning on the PS4.
Throw in James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet, and you have a new beginning.

Ratchet & Clank will officially be playable on the show floor at E3 next week, and we’re hoping it’ll take centre stage at the PlayStation press conference on June 15 (What’s that in my timezone?). The film adaptation is due in cinemas April 2016.
