This is stunning. It’s our first proper look at what’s in store when the Warcraft movie launches next year – and while it’s a still image, it’s a glorious, glorious shot of Robert Kazinsky as orc warchief Orgrim.
Normally, we’d say “there’s a man under there”, but – given the nature of CG, Kazinsky isn’t necessarily under there – but it’s his acting and expressions we’ll see when the film finally reaches cinemas.
Director Duncan Jones tells Wired magazine that Kazinsky was perfect for the role:
We were looking for someone who would be able to perform the gruffness, the humor, and the toughness of this character.
(The magazine also reveals that Jones wasn’t alone in this assessment of the actor – Kazinsky has also signed up to play Frankenstein’s monster in an upcoming TV series.)
But that’s the actor himself, and – in today’s first-look at least – all eyes are on Orgrim the character. He’s still got a fair amount of Kazinsky’s DNA in there, but the artists at Industrial Light and Magic have combined photographs and scans of the actor with concept art provided by Blizzard to create the final product. We can’t wait to see him in action!
We’ve gone beyond the point where these are just creatures in movies. We now have the technology and the ability to make new characters entirely.
Happily, these new characters – like Orgrim and his Warcraft compatriots – are in safe hands. The team at ILM have recently worked on Avengers: Age of Ultron (most notably, the incredibly emotional, expressive Hulk), so word on the street is that Blizzard‘s upcoming movie will feature the most life-like orc audiences have ever seen – completely computer-generated.
After years and years of development, Warcraft is set to hit US cinemas June 10, 2016.
