The next Assassin’s Creed has been revealed: Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is headed your way in October. Confirming several pre-announcement leaks, the game takes the franchise to Victorian-era London, and stars not one, but two Assassins – twin siblings Jacob and Evie Frye.
Marc-Alexis Côté, creative director at Ubisoft explains:
The ability to lead an underground gang, commandeer any vehicle on hand and use modern tools to take on an expansive and fast-paced Victorian London sets this game apart. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate has been in development for more than two years and this new modern take on the living open world will please Assassin’s Creed fans and newcomers alike.
Described as being set “during the height of the Industrial Revolution”, Syndicate explores a world where the gap between the rich and the poor is larger than ever before, and workers are little more than legalised slaves. Jacob Frye is a “determined, hot-headed and rebellious leader of an underground gang”, while his sister is a master of stealth and control. Raised to follow the Creed, the pair team up to challenge not only Templars but also rivals and the upper class, as they strive to free the masses from poverty.
At this stage, Evie’s being given almost equal billing to her brother, but we’re taking that with a grain of salt, following the series’ prior treatment of women. While we’re hoping she plays a major, starring role, we wouldn’t be surprised if she finds herself needing to be rescued at least once.
Meanwhile, gender politics aside, we’re promised a whole cache of new weapons, seeing revolvers, kukri knives and brass knuckles thrown into the mix as well as the traditional gauntlet. The open world London also demands new navigation and transportation tools, including a rope launcher and zip-lines – and we’re looking forward to free-running across both horse-drawn carriages and high-speed trains.
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is due to hit PS4 and Xbox One from October 23, while the PC version will follow later this year.
