From the very beginning, the addition of Star Wars to the Disney Infinity family seemed inevitable. Now, after one unfortunate leak, the news is official: Disney Infinity 3.0 will not just feature familiar characters from a galaxy far, far away – they’ll take on a starring role.
Designed to appeal to Star Wars fans of all ages, the game promises three themed Play Sets – one (Rise Against the Empire) set during the original trilogy Episodes IV-VI, another (Twilight of the Republic) fitting in with the prequel trilogy I-III, and the third (available later this year) tying in with the new movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Use the Force and your Lightsabers in epic battles, alongside Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Leia Organa Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca. All Star Wars figures are playable in all Play Sets!
If you’re not a Star Wars fan (and I know there are a handful of you out there), there will also be additional non-intergalactic Play Sets available: One is based on the upcoming film Inside Out, while the Marvel Superheroes make a return in a Play Set featuring Iron Man, Ultron, Hulkbuster and other familiar faces.
James Pitaro, President of Disney Interactive explains:
Disney Infinity is the only game where fans can play with Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters together in one experience. We worked closely with Lucasfilm to deliver an authentic Star Wars game experience, featuring some of the most iconic stories and characters from the past, present and future.
On the Toy Box side of things, the game’s been “fully enhanced”, with two new Expansion Games added. If you ever wanted to get into kart racing or the action-adventure of Takeover, your chance is nearly at hand!
…and, of course, there are plenty more toys too: Mickey and Minnie, Sam Flynn and Quorra from Tron: Legacy, Mulan, and Olaf from Frozen are among those who have been named so far, but there’s more on the way.
So, everything from that recent leak has turned out to be true, except for one detail. There seems to be no information just yet on whether your old Disney Infinity toys will work with the 3.0 hardware, something we’d have thought would be a Big Deal (this actually suggests they’ll be incompatible, otherwise Disney would be crowing about it…). When we find out, we’ll let you know.
