All your old plastic guitars will work with Rock Band 4

Wait a minute. The distance between Rock Band 4 and the just-announced Guitar Hero Live is set to widen, as Harmonix confirms Rock Band 4 will work with not only your old Rock Band instruments, but those dusty Guitar Hero peripherals as well.

Guitar Hero Live instead is priding itself on a brand-new design for its guitars, which aims to better mimic the way people play real guitars.

Rock Band 4 project director Daniel Sussman explains that – simply – it’s a cost-cutting measure.

Our position is really all about respect for our consumers and for the money that they have spent to get into the game space in the first place. They spend a fortune on games: on consoles, on hardware, and we’re sensitive to that.

Speaking with Business Insider (a well-known gaming publication), Sussman hints that the team is planning on exploring compatibility with the new Guitar Hero Live controllers.

We play those games too. We buy all the same stuff. A world where you need to have three different guitars and two drum sets and all this stuff is…we don’t want to support that world.

Both Rock Band 4 and Guitar Hero Live are due out before Christmas this year, with each game taking a very different approach to the genre.
